A child in the basket

I was waiting in the car for Kaveh that I saw this man riding a bike. His child was in the basket in front and a pile of boxes at the back. Yet he seemed cool and felt no danger for the child.
In Burma, due to the sanctions on the car import for a long time, bicycle is still popular between people.

‌‌‌beautiful homes of the homeless

I would never think I would start my architecture career here in Yangon, where even a building from 80s would be considered as "modern" architecture. It seems to me that most of the clients who look for an architect, usually look for those kind of commercial towers that you normally see in the renderings in the magazines. Yet I feel the power of vernacular architecture here more than even in my own country.
It was some time ago, when I was going to a project site outside of the city that I saw a row of huts parallel to the road with a water channel in between. I understood later that these are the huts that homeless people build in the suburbs. To me the structure and the materials that they used were super interesting. Each hut which was a house for a family was not bigger than a normal living room. A square room at the back and a verandah in front. That was the whole plan. All the walls were made by woven straw and the roof was thatch, so light and cool.. The air flows inside through the holes of the walls and beneath the hut. That provides the most basic comfort. Not as cool as AC but cool enough to spend all the day, lying on an old wooden chair in front of the verandah, watching children play, as most men do in this country.

The story of my ear & Dr.Hla Myint

My ear is blocked and painful. In the morning when I wake up, the first sound is like a bullet in my ear. All the talks and noises in the office is like boom boom. Doctor Hla Myint, is an old myanmar guy who speaks english pretty good. Here in Myanmar it seems that old people speak english much better than the young people. He wears longi like all myanmar men and he has a black bag that a guy always carry for him. In his bag he has a cardboard box, very old one, in which he keeps his tools. He doesn't sterilize his tools when he wants to use them in my ear, and after he's done with them, he cleans them with his hands and puts them back in his box. Every now and then, in the middle of his talk he laughs, somehow cutely for an old guy.
The story of my ear & Dr.Hla Myint is a bit funny since the first time I visited him, my ear was just simply blocked. But now I have visited him 4 times now, each time the pain becomes more severe. And he keeps telling me "sorry".
This time he told me "I have lost my faith, and I have lost my face."
We both decided not to see each other anymore!

DANGER: Nothingness ahead!

Night. No street lights. Cars in opposite direction shining their lights into your eyes. Buckets of water pouring down from the sky..
Here in Burma, I realized that while driving, being able to see in front of you is quite irrelevant. You have to use your imagination!

My family in pixels

skype with slow internet connection here, is more cruel than ever. ‌

Tropical 'cool' showers

The night we arrived at Yangon they took us to our apartment: Ta Pin Shwe Thee. We went to check out the bathroom. The shower looked like this
For a while we searched for the hot water tap... We found none.
(Don't try, we already searched quite thoroughly!)
Later we found out that in Burma there is no hot water, unless the water in a container almost boils under the merciless tireless sun.
Catch your breath, and push yourself under the cold water!

Wood.

I'm sitting here drinking my beer in the restaurant of Pun Hlaing Golf Club in Yangon.
I'm all alone except for a (probably wealthy Burmese) couple. The squeak of their wooden chairs makes the uncomfortable silence between them sound like a sharp blade cutting through their state of mind.
And I... feel good.
